How to Measure Your Cat’s Neck Circumference

Choose a calm moment — ideally when your cat is relaxed or resting.
Use a soft tape measure and wrap it gently around the base of the neck, where a collar would usually sit. Measure close to the skin, not over bulky fur.
Check the fit by slipping two fingers between the tape and your cat’s neck.
Note the measurement in centimetres, rounding up if your cat is between sizes.
Repeat once more to confirm accuracy.

How to Measure Your Cat's Neck Length

Use a soft tape measure to find the distance from the base of the skull (just behind the ears) down to the top of the shoulders. This gives you the vertical length of the neck — helpful when choosing between collar sizes with different depths.

Important Considerations

Use a soft tape measure for accuracy, or wrap a piece of string around the area and then measure the string against a rigid ruler.

Check the fit regularly, especially if your cat is growing or their weight changes.

📏 Sizing Tips

Most adult domestic shorthair cats will suit either a Small or Medium collar, depending on their build.

Every FeliFeed® collar includes a Velcro® tab fastener, allowing you to adjust the length so it fits your cat’s neck comfortably. Because of this adjustability, some cats may fit more than one size.

Medium and Large collars have a deeper profile, making them a better choice for cats with longer necks or a larger overall frame.

Please check the size table below for the full range of adjustable neck measurements.

If you’re unsure which size is right, you’re very welcome to contact us with your cat’s measurements — including neck circumference and neck length — and we’ll be happy to help you choose.

Each FeliFeed collar is hand-cut and crafted at Mabel Green Studio. As a result, there may be slight variations in the finished size.

Every cat is unique — but this visual guide offers a useful starting point.

We’ve grouped familiar cat breeds by typical adult size to help you estimate which FeliFeed® collar might suit your cat. However, these are general guidelines only, based on average adult neck sizes and weights; they’re not a substitute for measuring your own cat. For the best fit, please follow the measurement advice above.

We recommend the Extra-Petite collar for kittens. Most domestic shorthairs will suit either the small or medium collar, depending on their build.

Some Well-known Cat Breeds

Cornish Rex: Petite collar

An elegant, slim-built, medium-sized, athletic cat with a unique, wavy, short coat. They are known for their high energy, playful, and intelligent nature, and are also very sociable and affectionate with their owners. Their appearance is distinctive due to large ears, a small, wedge-shaped head, and long legs and tail.

Both breeds have curly coats, but the Cornish Rex has a finer, tighter curl with long, curved whiskers and a sleek, elongated body. The Devon Rex has a softer, wavier coat, shorter or broken whiskers, and a more compact, muscular build with a wider face and lower-set ears.

Singapura: Petite collar

The smallest recognised breed. The Singapura is an active and affectionate cat known for its playful, curious, and intelligent personality. It has a distinctive sepia-toned ticked coat and large eyes, and remains lively well into old age. These social cats thrive on human interaction and make excellent companions, often enjoying "helping" with tasks and wanting to be involved in everything their owner does.

Devon Rex: Petite or Small collar

The Devon Rex is a mischievous, active, and sociable cat known for its distinctive pixie-like appearance, which includes large ears, large eyes, and a soft, wavy coat.

Oriental Shorthair: Small collar

An elegant, medium-sized cat known for its distinctive features like large ears, a long, slender body, and a triangular face.

They are highly social, intelligent, and vocal, often described as "Velcro kitties" who love to be involved in their family's activities.

Their short, glossy coat comes in a vast array of colours and patterns, and they are known for being playful and affectionate.

Domestic Shorthair: Small or Medium collar

A domestic shorthair, or moggy, is a non-pedigree cat with a short coat and mixed ancestry, making them the feline equivalent of a mixed-breed dog. They come in a huge variety of colours, patterns, and sizes, often have a muscular build, and are generally hardy, healthy, and intelligent with a wide range of personalities.

Moggies are adaptable companions that typically require minimal grooming and have an average lifespan of 12-20+ years.

Adult weight range: 4.5 and 7 kg

British Shorthair: Small or Medium collar

A medium-to-large, sturdy cat known for its distinctive rounded face, broad cheeks, and dense, plush coat, often described as having a "teddy bear" appearance. They are a calm, easy going, and loyal breed, making them a popular companion for families.

The British Shorthair has been the most popular cat breed in the United Kingdom for over two decades. Believed to be the oldest cat breed in England, its lineage traces back to the cats of ancient Rome.

Before the breed was formally recognised, British Shorthairs were essentially the stray cats of the UK, highly valued for their exceptional hunting skills. These cats were prized as ratters and mousers, helping people safeguard their food and property. Today, the British Shorthair is known not only for its heritage and popularity but also for its robust health, with few breed-specific conditions reported.

Weight: Females: 4-6 kg · Males: 6-9 kg · Neck: 24–31 cm · Ideal fit with FeliFeed® collar size: SMALL to MEDIUM

Burmese: Small or Medium collar

A muscular, medium-sized breed with a short, glossy coat and large, expressive golden eyes. Known for being social, intelligent, and playful, they have a "puppy-like" personality and form strong bonds with their owners. They require companionship and enrichment to prevent boredom and can be quite vocal.

Ragamuffin: Medium or Large collar

A large, heavy-boned, and muscular breed that takes a long time to reach full maturity, often not until they are around four years old. They are a semi-longhaired cat with a rectangular body and a dense, plush coat in all colours and patterns. Known for its sweet, easy-going, and affectionate temperament, it is a friendly and adaptable family pet that is often described as a "huggable muffin".

Female adults: 4.5 and 6.8 kg
Male adults: 5.4 and 10 kg

Norwegian Forest Cat: Medium or Large collar

A large, sturdy, domestic cat breed known for its long, water-repellent double coat that helps it survive in harsh climates. This breed is known for its short, thick, and heavily muscled neck.

It takes 3 to 5 years for a Norwegian Forest Cat to reach full maturity. They are intelligent, friendly "gentle giants" with a playful and energetic nature, characterized by a triangular face and large paws with toe tufts that aid in climbing.

Female adults: 3.6 and 6 kg
Male adults: 5.4 and 9 kg

It’s important to remember that a cat’s ideal weight depends on their body frame, age, and overall health — not just a number on the scale.

Veterinarians use a Body Condition Score (BCS) to assess whether a cat is underweight, overweight, or at a healthy weight. For a healthy adult cat, you should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard and see a gentle waistline when viewed from above.
