A Museum-Grade "Time Capsule" of Mid-Showa Elegance

Discover a rare survivor from the golden age of Japanese textile production. This exquisite Kuro (Black) Haori was discovered in unworn, New Old Stock (NOS) condition.

It remains in its original "hibernation" state, still featuring the white shitsuke-ito (basting stitches) hand-placed by the tailor to preserve its crisp lines. It even retains the original protective paper over its single formal crest.

The Legend of the Katabami Crest

The back of the jacket features a single, hand-applied Katabami (Wood Sorrel) crest.

Historically a favourite of the Samurai class, the Katabami was chosen for its symbolism of indomitable strength.

Because the wood sorrel plant is famously hardy and difficult to uproot, it became a powerful emblem for a family line that could never be destroyed—a symbol of prosperity and a flourishing lineage.

The Heritage of Kyoto Craftsmanship

This piece showcases the legendary artistry of Kyoto, Japan’s historical heart of formal textiles.

  • The Weave: The exterior and lining are crafted from premium Rinzu (Silk Damask), likely woven in Kyoto’s world-renowned Nishijin district. The sophisticated tonal weave of abstract clouds and botanical motifs reveals itself subtly as it catches the light.

  • The Dye: The deep, "jet-black" finish is a hallmark of traditional Kyo-kuromontsuki-zome dyeing, a process perfected over centuries to create the most formal and prestigious silk garments.

"Hidden Luxury" (Iki)

Following the Japanese aesthetic of Iki—where true luxury is personal and private—the interior features a breathtaking secret.

The full silk lining boasts a high-density, white-on-white weave of auspicious folding fans (sensu), blooming chrysanthemums, and traditional "treasure" symbols, representing expanding fortune and a resilient spirit.

Modern Versatility & Condition

Hand-inspected and curated in the UK, this haori has been updated for modern wear with brand-new, authentic off-white silk himo (ties), perfectly complementing the "hidden" lining.

Its generous "wingspan" and structured silhouette offer a versatile, one-size fit that translates beautifully into a modern UK wardrobe as a luxurious alternative to a blazer or light coat.

    Vintage Disclaimer / “Character Marks”

    A Note on Vintage Condition

Please remember that haori are authentic vintage garments, often between 40 and 80 years old. As such, they may show gentle signs of their previous life: faint age spots, tiny pinholes, or subtle areas of fading. We view these character marks as part of the garment’s soul — a quiet record of its history, craftsmanship, and journey.

While every haori is carefully inspected and refreshed at Mabel Green Studio, we encourage you to embrace the individuality and lived‑in beauty of these one‑of‑a‑kind textiles.

    Cleaning

If your haori requires cleaning, we recommend using a specialist dry cleaner experienced in handling vintage fabrics and silks. This ensures the delicate fibres and dyes are treated with the care they deserve.

    Storage

The best way to store your haori is to fold it along its natural seams and keep it flat. This preserves the structure of the garment and protects the silk from unnecessary stress.

    Full Care Guide

A complete care leaflet will be included with your haori purchase.
