A refined mid‑century women’s black silk haori, crafted in Japan from luxurious heavyweight rinzu (silk damask). The exterior features an intricate tone‑on‑tone woven pattern of chrysanthemums (kiku) and feathered ferns (shida), symbols of longevity and prosperity. The fabric has a sculptural drape and a deep, shifting lustre characteristic of high‑quality Showa‑era weaving.
At the centre back sits a crisp Go‑san no Kiri (5–3 Paulownia) crest, historically associated with Imperial lineage and high‑ranking families. This single‑crest (one‑mon) placement marks the haori as a semi‑formal garment of distinction.
Inside, the haori reveals a beautifully woven jacquard silk lining with large‑scale peonies (botan) and chrysanthemums. The lining has a soft pearly sheen with subtle coral‑pink accents at the floral centres — a hidden luxury detail intended for the wearer.
Condition & Restoration
The outer silk is in excellent vintage condition. The mid‑century lining shows gentle, age‑appropriate patina, including natural yellowing, a few tiny stable pinholes on the upper lining, and faint marks consistent with age. The back collar has been professionally stabilised in our UK studio using a discreet silk ladder stitch. The repair is invisible from the exterior and ensures the haori is secure, comfortable, and ready to wear.

Why This Piece Is Exceptional
Unlike the many lightweight, plain‑silk haori on the market, this garment is made from superior heavyweight rinzu, giving it a richer drape and more sculptural presence. Vintage Disclaimer / “Character Marks”
A Note on Vintage Condition
Please remember that haori are authentic vintage garments, often between 40 and 80 years old. As such, they may show gentle signs of their previous life: faint age spots, tiny pinholes, or subtle areas of fading. We view these character marks as part of the garment’s soul — a quiet record of its history, craftsmanship, and journey.
While every haori is carefully inspected and refreshed at Mabel Green Studio, we encourage you to embrace the individuality and lived‑in beauty of these one‑of‑a‑kind textiles.
Cleaning
If your haori requires cleaning, we recommend using a specialist dry cleaner experienced in handling vintage fabrics and silks. This ensures the delicate fibres and dyes are treated with the care they deserve.
Storage
The best way to store your haori is to fold it along its natural seams and keep it flat. This preserves the structure of the garment and protects the silk from unnecessary stress.

A complete care leaflet will be included with your haori purchase.
