Behind the Seams
Behind the seams is where the work happens — precise, hands-on, and thoughtfully crafted. From the first cut to the final stitch, every piece reflects the care, skill, and creative direction that define Mabel Green Studio.

The Sewing Machine

My main sewing machine is the Singer Denim, purchased in 2023 — a modern domestic workhorse that performs with the strength and reliability of an industrial model. It handles everything from delicate cottons to heavy canvas without a flicker of hesitation.
It’s strong, steady, and endlessly dependable, giving me the power and precision I need whether I’m constructing a soft textile piece or stitching through layers. It’s the machine I trust for the foundations of my work, where durability and consistency matter most.
The Overlocker
Much of my work is shaped by the quiet reliability of my vintage New Home My Lock 234 overlocker — a late‑80s Japanese‑made machine with solid metal mechanics that still produces a beautifully clean, strong finish. It sits at the heart of my studio, pairing perfectly with my slow‑made approach: thoughtful fabric choices, careful construction, and a focus on durability over speed. Each piece that passes through its needles becomes part of a process that values craft, clarity, and the pleasure of making things well.

Sewing Projects

I love to create slow-made fashion items. This one is called The Beaulieu Jacket, which began with an incredible piece of vintage cotton‑canvas I found — a mid‑century furnishing fabric printed in rich reds, florals and scrolls, still marked ‘Beaulieu by Story Fabrics of London in Guaranteed Fast Colours.’ Turning it into a garment felt like giving the cloth a second life. Its weight, history, and bold patterning guided every decision as I cut, shaped, and stitched it into a one‑of‑a‑kind piece that celebrates both the fabric’s past and the slow, intentional making at the heart of my studio.
Crochet Projects
You’ll also find some of my crochet pieces appearing in the shop from time to time, including this fetching handbag made from recycled t‑shirts. I love working with materials that already have a life behind them, and crochet is a brilliant way to turn soft, worn cotton into something sturdy, textural, and unique. It’s another strand of my making that celebrates reuse, craft, and a bit of playful experimentation.
